ONE OF THE SPIRITUAL ARCHITECTS OF ANATOLIA, HACI BAYRAM-I VELİ IS BEING REMEMBERED IN AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM IN ANKARA, DECEMBER 14 TO 16.
Hacı Bayram-ı Veli was a prominent Turkish mystic who lived in Anatolia in the 14th and 15th centuries. A major force in the Islamization of Anatolia, Hacı Bayram-ı Veli was born near Ankara in the village of Zülfadl (Solfasol), which means possessor of merit. He spent his life appealing to the human heart and understanding. Hacı Bayram-ı Veli’s name was originally Numan. It was changed to Bayram (meaning fest) when he encountered Hamidüddin-i Veli (Somuncu Baba), another scholar and mystic of the time, on the morning of an Islamic holiday.
ADVISOR TO SULTANS
Hacı Bayram-ı Veli studied in Kayseri with Hamidüddin-i Veli, rising to a high rank in the knowledge of religious and scientific subjects. The ruler of the Ottoman state during Hacı Bayram-ı Veli’s lifetime, Sultan Murad II invited the great scholar to the then capital of Edirne. Sojourning briefly in the city, where he preached sermons in the mosque there, this beloved ‘sultan of hearts’ also served as an advisor to the Sultan Murad II before returning again to Ankara.
TEACHER OF AKŞEMSEDDİN
At his lodge, Hacı Bayram-ı Veli trained numerous pupils who would become as prominent as their teacher. Among those influential Anatolian spiritual guides were Akşemseddin, the teacher of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, Eşrefoğlu Rûmi, Ahmed-i Bican and Mehmed-i Bican.
IN THE HEART OF ANKARA
Hacı Bayram-ı Veli, who made it his lifelong purpose to train generations of virtuous young men through his verses, his conversation and his mentoring, died in Ankara in 1430 and is buried in the district of Ulus next to the mosque named for him.
