Stadtführer : Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is located on the western shore of the peninsula stretching 40 km inland. The city, also known as KL, expands upon a valley which is surrounded by hills from all sides. It is known that the population living in the metropolitan area of the city exceeds 6 million. Being the political and cultural center of the country, Kuala Lumpur, has gone through a rapid and glorious development phase in terms of business fields. Commerce, banking, manufacturing, transportation, information technologies, and –naturally- tourism are the business fields that stand out.
Kuala Lumpur is full of places to visit. Petronas Twin Towers, located at the heart of the city, is definitely one of the best places to start. These towers, also called “Menara” which means tower in the local language, were the tallest buildings in the world until October 2003. The towers, which are connected through a sky bridge/skyway on the 41st and 42nd floors, are open to visitors from 08:30 to 17:00 everyday except Monday.
The KLCC Shopping Mall, located at close proximity to the towers, is the right place to not only spend money but also make discoveries, listen to music, and have a good time. A trip to Petrosains Discovery Centre or attending one of the performances by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra are among activities available here. This spot, which is easily reachable by the lightrail system and taxi cabs, is located at walking distance to all major hotels.
The communications tower known as Menara KL offers a unique experience with the opportunity to see an extensive birds eye view of the city. The tower, which resembles a giant rattle, is one of the tallest buildings of the world with 421 meters. A restaurant, from which you can enjoy a 360 degree view of the city, is also located in the tower. Reservation in advance is required in order to guarantee a place in the restaurant’s ever-full tables.
The first place among the list of places to visit without traveling too far from Kuala Lumpur is the “Batu Caves”. Visitors have to climb up a flight of stairs of 272 steps in order to get into the biggest one of the caves, which can be reached by traveling northbound from the city. The Hindu community conducts religious ceremonies here throughout the Thaipusam Festival. In order to get some fresh air from the forest, you need to travel 40 km out of the city to the region called Rawang. The area called Temple Park as it is a temple surrounded by trees, is a very popular spot. If you are OK with traveling 45 minutes out of the city, “Genting Highlands”-which is a city of nature in itself- can be a nice spot for you to visit.
Culture & Entertainment
Religious structures are interesting with their unique architectural characteristics and great harmony with nature. National Mosque (Masjid Negara), Thean Hou and Mahamariaman Temples, and Masjid Jamek which is located at the point where Klang and Gombak rivers are closest to each other are among beautiful spots for you to see.
Bukit Nanas, a forest reserve located considerably close to downtown, is a wildlife area of 10.5 hectares. Visitors experience serenity while walking on pathways through lakes and gardens all to themselves. Among works to see here is the monument that the American sculptor Felix de Weldon designed for people who were killed in World War II. The walk starting from Bird and Butterfly Parks, and Orchid and Hibiscus Gardens heads towards the National Museum and Activity Center.
Numerous places such as the National Museum – which preserves a great deal of the history and culture of Malaysia-, structures named after the first president Tunku Abdul Rahman and the second president Tun Abdul Razak, the Police Museum, Islamic Arts Museum, and Natural History Museum can be visited here. The courthouse by the name Sultan Abdul Samad, the train station, and the parliament building embody glamorous architectural details making them all worth a visit.
Food & Drink
The variety of food and drinks in Kuala Lumpur is very impressive. The most interesting notice you will find on them is to distinguish the “halal” from “non-halal.
Jalan Sultan, Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Petaling all located downtown, and Jalan Alor located in the Golden Triangle are quite unique in terms of variety in food and drinks.
There are many local eating places operated by Indian Muslims and appear to be the most significant alternative to the unique locations above. They are almost at every corner of the city and of course, offer halal products too. Jalan Doraisamy is advised as the place to go for “roti canai” the most famous dish from the local cuisine.
The shopping area by the name “the Central Market” stands out as a marketplace in which you can not only dine in various restaurants; but also purchase hand-made products. “Sunday Market” which is open from Saturday night to the morning hours on Sunday is another scene from the culture and history of Malaysia. Among other shopping areas are Lot 10, KL Plaza, Sungai Wang Plaza, Imbi Plaza and Low Yat Plaza –an area in which computer and electronics products are available in general. The area including all of the locations listed in known as the “Golden Triangle.”
