Al-Jazari’s Trick Device - The Perpetual Flute
Al-Jazari’s Trick Device - The Perpetual Flute
The medieval physicist and robotics genius Al-jazari Invented a number of ‘trick devices’ to explain the basic principles of mechanics.
One of those devices, which mainly illustrated the working principles of the siphon, the lever and the pivot, was a water-powered perpetual flute, whose melodies no doubt resounded through the halls of the Seljuk and Artukid palaces of the period.

A replica of Al-Jazari’s perpetual flute is on display in the Museum of Science and Technology in Islam at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
