Golden Bear In Search Of Recipient
ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS FILM FESTIVALS, THE BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (BERLINALE) IS GREETING FILM BUFFS ON FEBRUARY 7 THIS YEAR.
One of the cinema world’s top accolades of ever increasing importance since their inception in 1951, the Golden Bear Awards are given away at the Berlin International Film Festival, which is opening its doors to cinephiles this year for the 63rd time. The Berlinale, which will host upwards of 400 films February 7 to 17, has a special importance for Turkish film buffs. The festival made Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s name heard round the world when he won the Caligari Award for his film, The Town, in 1998, and Fatih Altın walked off with the top-prize Golden Bear for his film, Against, in 2004.
FIRST INTERNATIONAL AWARD
Written and directed by Metin Erksan and starring Hülya Koçyiğit and Erol Taş, Dry Summer (Susuz Yaz) was the first Turkish production to win an international award with its Golden Bear in 1964.
TWO TURKS IN 2012
Two Turkish films that competed at the Berlinale in 2012, Emin Alper’s Beyond the Hill took the Caligari prize and Reis Çelik’s Night of Silence (Lal Gece) the Crystal Bear award in the youth film category.
