For those who can experience all four seasons, there is no doubt that summer is the most enjoyable of all for many reasons, not the least of which is food. Imagine, for example, that you've spent the whole day at the beach and you're on your way home. You feel pleasantly tired and your stomach is sending urgent signals. The table you see laid for you when you step in the door revives you at once. Ice cold, blood-red watermelon next to a plate of white cheese. And the centerpiece? Cold green beans cooked in olive oil, flanked by fried eggplant, zucchini and peppers, and a big bowl of fresh yoghurt. And top to it all off, bing cherries, sour cherries, berries and figs...

EATING IN SEASON
In the old days we used to wait for months to sit down to such a feast. Summer will come, we would say, and we'll eat our fill of its special fruits and vegetables.
