The 10th anniversary of the young Republic
of Turkey was
celebrated with great rejoicing all over
the country.
It was 1933. Exactly ten years had passed
since the proclamation of the Republic
on 29 October 1923. The young Republic
was preparing to celebrate its 10th birthday.
So much had happened in the intervening
ten years. The past had cast a long shadow
over everything and it was high time for
some much-needed light: reforms, economic
investments, a new emphasis on culture,
education and art.
Creating a miracle out of ruin, the Turkish
people had made serious progress by the
tenth anniversary of the Republic which
they had founded by relying on their national
sovereignty without the protection of
any other state. Therefore this anniversary
deserved to be celebrated. To coordinate
the festivities, the government got down
to work and on 11 June 1933 issued Law
no. 2305 governing ‘the Celebration
of the 10th Anniversary of the Proclamation
of the Republic’. This was quickly
followed by three more laws deemed necessary
as appendices to the first.
