City Guide : Accra

Raggea sounds emanating from golden beaches surrounded by palm trees blend with sounds of waves curving out of the Atlantic. Expensive holiday resorts facing the ocean, restaurants, entertainment locations come together with monuments, museums, a busy work scene, and of course slums on the other side of the city. Hundreds of colors in this spectrum are waiting to be discovered. Although, not all parts of Ghana are as tempting as the Labadi Beach; Accra with many similar ocean beaches offers a typical tropical African experience.

Thanks to Kotoka Airport located 12 km away from downtown, having this experience gets easier. Nowadays the city, made up of neighboring tribe villages which used to be ruled by Ga chiefs, is striving to portray a modern appearance. Accra, capital city of Ghana since 1877, is also the most populated city in the country. There are two metropolitan areas within the city called Tema and Accra. Also the biggest commercial and industrial institutions of the country are concentrated in these two areas.

Ghanaian beaches “Labadi Pleasure Beach” and Kokrobite Beach are located westward, only 25 km away from Accra. These beaches are famous not only among Ghanaians, but also in all of Africa. The beaches are particularly crowded and busy on the weekends. Labadi and Kokrobite are beaches with entrance fees. Musicians and acrobats do all they can to entertain guests. You can join in on the fun by putting in a token. Let us also point out that traveling salesmen with countless items of various sizes await you inside as well.

If you are looking for a quieter beach, you should opt for CoCo Beach in the Teshie Region. It is important to keep in mind that it is relatively more pebbly and harder to swim in before going there. Misty Beach, located between Teshie and Tema regions is a good choice as well. The shore line starting from here is called “Island”, stretching all the way to the area where the big Volta River flows into the ocean. This river-ocean meeting on the shore of the Atlantic has created a considerably large resort area. Water sports and cruise opportunities along the river carry the borders of this area further.

Tema Metropolitan is a relatively new residential area located 30 km away. It is not only the most important commercial port, but also the largest fishing district. It is one of the eminent locations for trade as well. Ghana University is located 14 km away to the north. This area stands out as a separate residential area, populated mostly by students.
  • Culture & Entertainment

Among places that stand out in Accra, National Museum perhaps takes first place. The easiest way to see the cultural accumulation and historical richness of Ghana, is to visit this museum. In order to take a trip from prehistoric times until our time in this museum, you must set aside two hours of your time. The museum is located on Barnes Road. The fiery soul of Africa embraces you from the hall on the first floor where archeological findings are displayed. National Theater and Centre for National Culture, Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the fishing port in James Town, and Makola Market are among places to see.

The largest conference hall of the country “The Accra International Conference Centre” is one of the main points of attraction of the city. The monument in Independence Square was erected for three Ghanaians who gave up their lives for independence during the colonization era. The other tomb you can see in the square, located at the central point of the city, belongs to Kwame Nkrumah- the first president of Ghana. He spent the last years of his life in Accra. Also, the tomb of W.E.B Du Bois -American-born civil rights activist- is located at this intersection. .

You must head north to reach the Accra Zoo on Independence Avenue, located in the Kanda Region. You will be able to see the sign that will lead to the zoo once you take a left right after Afrikiko restaurant. The zoo is open to visitors between 9.30 and 17.00 everyday.
  • Food & Drink

Osu is a location frequented by perhaps the largest number of tourists in Accra. Cantoments Road, considerably the main street of Osu which is located close to Art Centre and Independence Square, is the place where you can get an idea of just how frequented it is.The reason for the attractive quality of the area is the numerous hotels and restaurants located on the street. The array of foods expand from fast food to Chinese, Indian, Lebanese, and French cuisines. Of course, tastes unique to Ghana are waiting for you here as well.
  • Shopping

The ever-burning fire in the Revolution Square, in a way, marks the central point of the city. National Museum is right next to this central point. After seeing the elite collections of West Africa, you can go on to Makola Market located on Kojo Thompson Road right next to the museum. In addition to hand grown produce of the African soil, you will find items unique to Africa, traditional clothing, and fabrics. Agbogbloshie Market, on Fadama Road, is a relatively new building. Markets such as Kaneshie and Kantamanto are other places you can stop by in downtown Accra.

Another place to visit is the Osu Night Market. This charming marketplace, set up at night and lit up by candles, is a must-see.
