FROM THE REICHSTAG TO ALEXANDERPLATZ The ideal route for getting to know the city is to start from the Reichstag, or new parliament building, and proceed through the Brandenburg Gate to the Television Tower at Alexanderplatz. One of the widest boulevards in Europe, Unter den Linden is lined with elegant embassy buildings as well as the Old Palace, the Opera House and Berlin Cathedral.
VISIT THE WALL
Stretching along the north bank of the River Spree that flows through the center of the city, the East Side Gallery is the best preserved section of the Berlin Wall. The most interesting part of this open-air museum, which consists of almost 1.2 kilometers of wall, are the graffiti produced here by artists from around the world.
Berlin is a shopper’s paradise with over 20 thousand shops, boutiques and luxury stores. Not only that but the city’s various quarters also boast over 30 bazaars and flea markets. Besides the Kurfürstendamm, or Ku’damm, Berlin’s Champs-Elysees, you can also find the city’s elite fashion houses and famous charcuteries in side streets.
FIRST UNIVERSAL MUSEUM TO OPEN
Don’t miss the Pergamon Museum on Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island), which consists of five historic museums on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Neues Museum is opening its doors on 15 October as the world’s first universal museum.
BERLIN’S FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
Starting on 14 October Berlin is going to be awash in light for 12 straight days. A wide variety of lighting techniques will be used for the Festival of Lights, which will bathe the city’s streets and boulevards and all its prominent historic as well as modern buildings in spellbinding color. Buses dubbed ‘light liners’ will take festival-goers on special ‘lightseeing’ tours for the duration of the festival.
