Genius, schizophrenic and pianist

Shine’, the film that won Geoffrey Rush the Oscar for best actor, is the story of a music-loving father with mental health problems who loaded his son with the musician identity he was never able to achieve himself.

Pianist David Helfgott, whose life the film chronicles, spent twelve years in a mental institution following a breakdown he suffered during a concert. Helfgott nevertheless succeeded in returning to life and becoming one of the most illustrious pianists of all time. Now, on the evening of 12 September, he will be giving a concert at the Aya Irini Museum.
