The Leyla Gencer House

The Milan home of Leyla Gencer, one of the great divas of the 20th century, is now in Istanbul!

The house of Leyla Gencer, the Turkish soprano who for twenty-five years was the prima donna of opera’s prestigious La Scala, has found a new home at İKSV’s (Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Art) Deniz Palas. Those who would like to make a closer acquaintance with this artist, whose inimitable personality aroused admiration and wonder both on stage and in her private life, should not miss this opportunity. At the Leyla Gencer House there is the sitting room where her piano has pride of place, the library where she spent long hours, the dining room where she took pains to serve authentic Turkish dishes, and the bedroom with the clothes and accessories she loved so much, as well as photographs and the many awards and medals she received over the years. This venue, which reflects Gencer’s personal tastes and the things she valued most in life, is chock full of details that reveal her own colorful career.

Located on the second floor of the İKSV building, the Leyla Gencer House represents the labor of decorator Pier Luigi Pizzi, Artistic Director of the Sferisto Opera, who worked closely with Gencer for many years. Also not to be forgotten is the assistance of Melahat Behlil, Franca Cella and Massimo Gasparon.
