Music For The Moment

IMAM BAILDI IS A BAND THAT COMBINES ANCIENT GREEK MELODIES WITH BALKAN MUSIC AND THEN ADDS HIP-HOP, RUMBA AND SAMBA RHYTHMS. AND THEY ARE IN ISTANBUL ON DECEMBER 27…

Even in winter… Mild weather, a sunny evening, some light snacks, lots of laughter… Now there is music for exactly such a moment. Happy, fun, heartfelt… It’s Imam Baildi, formed in 2005 by two brothers from Greece, Lysandros and Orestis Falireas. A blend of Latin rhythms and hip hop with Balkan melodies. The team explain it like this: “What we do is to find old pop songs and then add a fresh new flavor with music we write ourselves making use of different kinds of music from all over the world in the process. In general, we like to use Balkan music and Greek tunes, but we also have songs that bring together the whole world from Spain to Cuba. In fact, there’s even a song from Puerto Rico on our latest album.”

As for where they find so many old songs, there’s a bit of family involved. As they tell it, “Our Dad has a small record company and a huge record collection. That collection was the starting point for our career. We listened to fabulous voices and recordings from the 1930’s and ‘50’s and used them on our albums. All those songs have incredibly interesting stories and beautiful melodies. We’re crazy about them. And because the technology on those old recordings was nothing like today’s technology, the beautiful voices stand out and the result is amazing.”

TAVUKGÖĞSÜ AND KAZANDİBİ
The name Imam Baildi (İmam Bayıldı in Turkish, literally, the İmam Fainted and the name of a famous Turkish eggplant dish) is entirely a joke. Yes, yes, they called the band Imam Baildi just to be funny: “Before we formed Imam Baildi in 2005 we used to joke that our music was like imam bayıldı because it was made up of so many different ingredients. So, in the end, the name seemed very apt.”

But they hadn’t a clue about the story of the Turkish dish. All they knew was that it has lots of eggplant, onions and garlic… As for what they do know about Turkish cuisine, “Turks and Greeks have so many dishes and sweets in common… As a group we all really love tavukgöğsü and kazandibi (two Turkish milk puddings, one made with shredded chicken breast, the other with a caramelized bottom crust). And of course lahmacun (Turkish-style pizza), which is pretty darned good…”

THE LATEST ALBUM
Bringing out an album of the same name in 2007 that remained at the top of the Greek charts for weeks, Imam Baildi released their second album last year: The Imam Baildi Cookbook.
