40 Days And 40 Nights Of Complate Fun


The Istanbul Shopping Fest, which kicked off at the sound of a gong on Fransız Sokak on March 19th, ended on April 26th following 40 days and 40 nights of non-stop shopping fun. The scene of myriad activities from concerts to contests for the duration, Istanbul was literally flooded with visitors. A favorite with foreign as well as Turkish tourists, the festival gave a boost to shopping in the city and more than accomplished its aim of reviving the domestic market.

The main venues for the events, Abdi İpekçi, Bağdat and İstiklal Streets were brightly lit for the 40 day-40 night shopping marathon thanks to a series of concerts, street exhibitions and fashion shows. Every Saturday night one shopping center each on the city’s European and Anatolian sides stayed open until 2 a.m. One of the main attractions of the festival, where consumers enjoyed discounts of up to 30 percent, was the Fashion Festival staged on Serdar-ı Ekrem Caddesi on April 9th.

Realized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Office of Governor of Istanbul Province, with the support of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkish Exporters Association and coordination by the Shopping Center Investors Association, the Shopping Centers and Retailers Association and the United Brands Association, the Istanbul Shopping Fest ended with pure pleasure for all involved. The festival, which expended considerable effort on promotion abroad, reaped the fruits of its efforts and has decided to expand in scale in the years ahead. 

Bağdat Party
A major thoroughfare on the city’s Asian side, Bağdat Caddesi came to life on the evening of Saturday, April 9th in an Istanbul Shopping Fest event staged by the Power FM DJ’s. Starting at 7 p.m., dance and percussion shows and LED screen games continued throughout the night as surprise gifts were distributed. Revelers who came to Bağdat Caddesi were regaled with performances by the popular Power FM DJ’s Geveze & Bay J. Nor was the fun limited to this. Visitors to the avenue also shopped till they dropped at special discounts.

ProcessIon on İstiklal Another special event of the Istanbul Shopping Fest was a procession that started from from the Odakule building on İstiklal Caddesi at 11:30 the morning of April 16th and continued up to Taksim Square at the top of the hill. Festival managers and prominent figures from the sector also joined in the festivities.

Held this year for the 14th time, the International Istanbul Puppet Festival is kicking off on May 4th with a play titled Bird Machine by the New York theater group, Concrete Temple. Director Derviş Zaim will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the festival, which ends on May 14th.
Acknowledged to be one the best jazz vocalists since the early eighties, Dianne Reeves is İs Sanat’s guest on May 5th. Guitarists Russell Malone and Romero Lumbambo will be accompanying the singer, who is coming to Istanbul as part of a project titled Strings Attached Inspired by the paperboys who deliver newspapers on their bikes, Papergirl is a project originally conceived in Germany. Aiming to take the art into the public arena, the project will be collecting the works of artists up to May 10th for exhibition later in public venues..

Taking place this year for the first time, the International Humor Festival starts on May 12th. The festival, which will reflect the tradition of Turkish humor from Keloğlan, Karagöz-Hacivat and Tuzsuz Deli Bakır to Nasreddin Hoca, Kavuklu and Hababam Sınıfı, ends on May 15th.
Held this year at Belek, the third Turkish International Salsa Festival opens on May 24th. The festival, which features La Excelencia, owner of the Best Latin Album, and world salsa champion duo Luis Vazquez & Melissa Fernandez, ends on May 29th.

One of the world’s largest army choruses, the Alexandrov Red Army Chorus is celebrating its 83rd anniversary this year. The chorus, which has close to 2,000 works in its repertoire, is at TİM Maslak Show Center May 27th to 29th.

Held in a number of countries since 2006, the Extreme Sailing Series races, in which the world’s most talented sailors compete, is being hosted this year by Istanbul. The Third Leg of the Extreme Sailing Series takes place on the Golden Horn May 27th to 29th.

Tipped by the musical experts as one of the most talented guitarists of our time, Irina Kulikova, who first appeared on the national and international stage at the age of 12, is Akbank Sanat’s guest on May 17th as part of Guitar Days.
