Understanding The Hajj

The largest gathering on earth for the last thirteen centuries, the hajj is the only uninterrupted religious ritual in the history of man.

Aware that the Hajj is the key to understanding Islam, and no doubt out of curiosity about the cities of Mecca and Medina which are off limits to non-Muslims, the Western world has been trying to understand the Hajj pilgrimage from as far back as the 16th century right up to our day.

Today we see the finest and most comprehensive fruit of that centuries-old curiosity in an exhibition at the British Museum titled simply ‘Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam’. Officially opened by Prince Charles on January 26, the exhibition runs till April 15.
