The Rouargue Brothers’ Istanbul

François Joseph Pierre Méry, a well-known novelist of the period whose books were followed with keen interest, came to Istanbul on a journey he set out on in 1822. Méry collected his impressions in a book, Constantinople et la Mer Noire, published in Paris in 1855. The engravings in the book, which treats subjects from everyday life of Istanbul, were made by the Rouargue Brothers, who were well-known lithographers of the day.
