As we savor the last days of summer, we at Turkish Airlines continue to chalk up some pretty impressive developments of our own. For one thing, the International Air Travel Association (IATA), one of the world’s most respected authorities in civil aviation, has named us one of the ten biggest airlines in the world in terms of number of international passengers carried in their ‘Airlines’ 2010’ ranking. Our place on this list, which ranks airlines according to critical traffic data, is just another indication of the superior performance demonstrated by Turkish Airlines, and we are determined to take that achievement even higher.
The single most important factor underlying our success is the appreciation shown by you, our valuable passengers, in choosing our airline for your travels. Our company was deemed worthy of the award for best airline in Europe in the Skytrax ratings based on votes cast by 18.8 million passengers from around the world. We also garnered the award for Best Seats in Premium Economy Class. Earning the esteem of you, our valuable passengers, on the one hand and the respect of the leading institutions in our industry on the other not only makes us happy but motivates us to do even better.
A look at actual and potential civil aviation traffic between the major regions of the world reveals our country and center of operations, Istanbul, to be sitting on top of a virtual gold mine. Close to 20 percent of the world’s air travel passes through here, presenting a unique opportunity for us to attract far more transit traffic to Istanbul and Turkey by building a third airport in Istanbul. With the favor and appreciation shown by you, our passengers and the authorities of our sector, we here at Turkish Airlines are doing our best to maximize that potential to ensure that our company and our country come out ahead.
Our aim is to make Istanbul the world’s most accessible city by 2023, the 100th anniversary of the founding of our Republic. In line that with aim we are continuously adding new destinations and increasing the number of our already existing flights. Istanbul’s position as a natural bridge between East and West coupled with the intensive efforts of our Turkish Airlines family and the confidence shown in us by you, our passengers, are going to cement our company’s position as a leader in its sector.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy Republic Day on October 29th.
Temel Kotil, Ph.D.
