City Guide : MumbaiLocated at the west cost of India, on the Salsette Island, Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and the most populous city of India. The city is composed of lakes, rivers, creeks, bays and islands. Mumbai is the commercial, financial and entertainment capital of India. The port of the city is a significant international trade location. The Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange of India and the headquarters of most of the countrywide corporations are located at the city. Mumbai is home to Bollywood (Indian Film and Television Industry). The city climate is generally warm and humid with three seasons (winter, summer and rainy seasons).
Tourist AttractionsMumbai is an attractive tourist destination to be experienced rather than being toured. The city stands in the forefront with its nightlife and its beaches.
Coloba and Fort area is the first stop to start your journey of exploring the city. Gateway of India in Coloba is the starting point to tour the city. Being a remnant of the British Raj, this monument is a popular spot, especially in the evening and on the weekend. As the Mumbai's hearth, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus) at Flora is the most brilliant monument from the Raj-era. This Gothic architectural highlight is more than a station. St. Thomas' Cathedral at Fort is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mumbai. This enchanting church is the oldest British building in the city.
Nehru Planetarium and Nehru Center at Worli has a bold modern architecture. Its tower is striking. There is an historical exhibition, a theater and restaurant within the cultural complex.
Elephanta caves on Island off the coast is another UNESCO World Heritage Site at the city. Taking a ferry from Gateway of India to the Elephanta Island is one of the best things that you can do in Mumbai. In addition to its natural atmosphere, you will get to know Hinduism at the island.
Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum at Chowpatty is the building where Mahatma Gandhi stayed when he came to Mumbai. This small house is now used as the museum. Here, you will find a photographic history of his life and the letters that he wrote to Hitler and Roosevelt.
Culture & EntertainmentMumbai is the homeland of Indian Cinema, Bollywood. Indian film industry is the biggest one in the world considering the number of films produced throughout the year.
Mumbai has a potent performing arts scene. National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) harbors the stages of Jamshed Bhabha Theatre (the first opera theater of the city), Tata Theater, Little Theater and Experimental Theater. English dramas, musical concerts, small-scale dances and more are performed at these stages. Prithvi Theater at Juhu is home to the best plays of the country during annual drama festival. Nehru Center at Worli is the cultural center for both Indian and Western theater and music performances.
The city hosts many festivals and cultural events. Mumbai Mango Madness (May) is one of the most significant summertime events. Alphonso mangoes and their juice are amply consumed. Elephanta Island Festival (September-May) is the classical music and dance festival held on the Elephanta Island. Nag Panchami (Snake Day, July) is celebrated all around the country. At the festival, the snake charmers make incursions onto the city streets and the snake images garnish the city. Various snake traditions of Hinduism are staged.
Cricket is the most popular game in the city. The beaches of the city are magnificent natural locations for fresh air, sun, sea and more joyous amusements.
Nightlife is different from the other cities of the country. The existence of a more western night entertainment is realized at the city. Bars, discos, clubs and other places offer a great range of music genres.
Food & DrinkMumbai has the best restaurants in India. The cosmopolitan structure of the population shows itself in the culinary culture of the city. Parsi food, the Western fastfood chains, Italian, especially Chinese palates and seafood, continental and whatever you want is available for your taste.
The city is famous with its street food stalls and food bazaars. Bhelpuri stalls, Vada Pav stands, Sandwich stands and Chinese food stalls are among the most prevalent kinds.
