City Guide : OshThe city of Osh is one of the oldest settlements in not only Kyrgyzstan; but also in all of the Middle East. Osh, which follows Bishkek in terms of size, has an approximately 3 thousand year long history. The city, which is the administrative center of Osh Province, is located in the southwestern part of the country. The region, one of the greenest places in the Middle East, is also located at the end of Fergana Valley. The city of Osh, in which all four seasons are experienced simultaneously, has redefined itself as a city of science and education where tradition, culture, and a dynamic city life is in the air.
You can explore Osh for hours on foot, which is the best way to capture the cultural details. Osh, surrounded by mountains, has the appearance of a city which is in harmony with nature. Sulayman, Kaklik-Uchar, Tur Buas mountains and, of course, Fergana Valley are the main components of this appearance.
The city, located right next to the Uzbekistan border, is separated from the capital city Bishkek by a mountain range which is a part of Tian-Shan (“Celestial Mountains”). The city is an important stop on the highway that originates from Bishkek and reaches Dushanbe and Khujand in Tajikistan. The coal, lead, and zinc that is extracted from the surrounding mountains make up the other detail that reveals the city's industrial character.
Ak-Bugra River runs through the city on a north-south direction. Sulayman Mountain which catches your eye to the west, is -without a doubt- the most dominant symbol of the city. On the peak of the mountain, which is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are a flag pole and a mosque that was built in 1497. The mosque was built by the order of Emperor Babur, who rose to the throne as the Sultan of Fergana Valley at the young age of 14. Emperor Babur, who had to run away to safety from the fight for the throne, continued his quest with an empire with his own name, in India.
In addition to the house of Babur, you can see a 16th century mosque on Sulayman Mountain. The number of visitors to the mosque, called Rabat Abdul Khan, reaches a thousand a day. Imam Al-Bukhari Mosque, one of the largest and oldest mosques in the Middle East, is another place to visit.
The influence of Russians who conquered the city in the 19th century and -without a doubt- the Soviet architectural style dominate everywhere from boulevards to side streets. Twenty percent of the residential area is made up of private houses called Dacha. The remaining, approximately, eighty percent is made up of apartment buildings.
Culture & Entertainment
The city center is the sole option to go for cultural and social events. Winter sports, especially skiing, is among what the city of Osh has to offer to you. The surrounding mountains present a rare opportunity for not only mountain climbing; but also for trekking with its trails.
There is a museum that you can visit on Sulayman Mountain. You can see the findings of archeological excavations executed in the region, historical remains, and geological examples together in this museum.
As it is fitting for a mountain-city, Osh-where the temperature does not go above 30 degrees Celcius in summer- offers the opportunity for a relatively cool summer vacation. In order to capture the magnificence of nature and the new year's festivals, spring months should be selected for a .
The dynamism of the nightlife, theater, and the concerts which increase in number during spring months are other entertainment options that the city of Osh has to offer.
Food & DrinkOsh is a place where you can conveniently find Italian, Russian, Indian, Pakistani, and Chinese cuisines. Naturally, Kyrgyz and Uzbek dishes make up the local cuisine. Especially in the city center of Osh, there are numerous restaurants and cafes where you can get a chance to try all of all these tastes.
ShoppingThe market of the city which is set up on sundays, continues a 2000 year old tradition. The market in question has been set up approximately in the same location for thousands of years, on two opposite banks of a river in the northern part of the city. Among items sold are clothing, home appliances and souvenirs; in addition to fruits and vegetables of the abundant Fergana. From the Middle Ages to our time, the city -which is located on the trade route that connects China, India, and Europe- still pins the three in this marketplace.
