City Guide: Kiev

Located at the north central section of the country on the two banks of Dnieper River, Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. Founded in the 5th century, it was the capital of Russia and Belarus throughout the history. Before the collapse of Soviet Union, Kiev was the third largest city of the union. The capital shown as the center of Slavic culture is the political, economical, educational and cultural center of Ukraine. The city is one of the most important industrial and high-technology centers of the Eastern Europe.

• Tourist Attractions

  In addition to its Slavic cultural treasury, Kiev captivates the person by its architectural monuments recognized as the world treasuries, beautiful parks and gardens.
  
  Kiev is a favorable tourism city with its world-famous and architecturally significant monuments. Constructed in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Saint Sophia Cathedral is the oldest church in Kiev and a World Heritage Site. Most of the mosaics and frescoes of the church are original. The gold domes and the bell tower of it are the baroque additions from the 18th century. Kievo Pechersky Caves Monastery is a mind-blowing complex of churches set on the green hills residing along the banks of Dnieper River. It is stunning to watch the golden-domed churches. The labyrinths of catacombs illuminated by candles are exotic and striking.
  
  Mariyinsky Palace, St. Andrew’s Church and Golden Gate are some of the other noteworthy architectural landmarks placed at the city.
  
  Kiev is regarded as a tight green city with amazing botanical gardens and beautiful small parks. State Botanical Garden and Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are two of the most stunning botanical gardens of the capital.

  For centuries, Kiev remained as the cultural and historical center of Russia. Standing as one of the major centers for the Slavic culture, the city has a vibrant and diverse culture. A large number of museums and theaters are attracting enough for the art-lovers. The nightclubs, casinos and cinemas existed in Kiev offer a dynamic entertainment life.
