Renewal Through Art
Renewal Through Art
LONDON’S WHITECHAPEL GALLERY HAS UNDERGONE A FACELIFT WITH ENGLISH ARTIST RACHEL WHITEREAD’S TREE OF LIFE FRIEZE.
Also present at the unveiling was film director and artistic director of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, Danny Boyle. Symbolizing social renewal through art, the Tree of Life was a prominent theme of the 19th century Arts and Crafts movement. The frieze represents Whiteread’s reinterpretation of a design made for the building earlier but never realized.
The Water Tower, completed in New York in 1998 by Whiteread, who first drew attention with her work House in 1993, still stands as a lasting public monument.
