Viewing Our Cultural Heritage From The Past
SALT GALATA HAS BEEN TAKING A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON HISTORY, ART AND ARCHITECTURE SINCE 2011. NOW THE GALLERY IS HOSTING A NEW EXHIBITION, MODERN TURKEY’S DISCOVERY OF THE OTTOMAN HERITAGE: THE ALİ SAİM ÜLGEN ARCHIVE, FEBRUARY 8 TO MARCH 24.
The exhibition, at SALT Galata’s Open Archive, features an extensive selection of books, manuscripts and photographs as well as the notes, writings, sketches and reliefs of Ali Saim Ülgen (1913-1963), one of Turkey’s first specialists in architectural restoration. Based on these documents, all the product of Ülgen’s meticulous research, the exhibition aims to create awareness of the preservation and restoration of cultural treasures in Turkey prior to 1960.

Thoughts on Ülgen’s preservation of the cultural heritage and restoration of architectural monuments in Turkey will be discussed at a conference to take place with the participation of architects and historians on the opening day of the exhibition, February 8th.
