City Guide : Boston

Boston is the capital and the most populous city in the Federal Sate of Massachusetts, which is one of the six states located in the New England region of the United States of America. The city has world-renowned cultural and academic institutions. Over 100 colleges and universities with more than 250.000 college students play one of the main roles for the city to be called the Athens of America. The first public school of America (Boston Latin School), Harvard College in neighboring Cambridge and the first subway system in the United States are located in Boston.

  • Tourist Attractions

    The glory of the past and the modern ambiance compose a harmony in this quaint and lovely city. You breathe the old world when walking through the colonial buildings and the 19th century architectures while the mirror walls of the skyscrapers catch your eyes. It is easy to walk through the parks, schools and cozy museums of this “walking city”.

    Boston's reputation as the walking city is mainly due to the Freedom Trail which is one of  America's first historic walking tours taking you to  16 historical sites within two or three hours. A red painted line creates a network and path between the sites on the Freedom Trail.

    The Paul Reverse House located in  the city center is the oldest house in the city and was built in 1680.

    Emerald Necklace is an area of 1.100 acres composed of nine parks that are connected by parkways and waterways. Linked through a linear system, the names of the parks are Boston Common, Public Garden, Commonwealth Avenue Mall, Back Bay Fens, Riverway, Olmsted Park, Jamaica Pond Park, Arnold Arboretum and Franklin Park.

    Outstanding museums are located in Boston. John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Dorchester is a magnificent modern and marble building exhibiting the Kennedy's life and legacy.
  • Culture & Entertainment

    The culture of the city relies on the literati population of the city and the high population of educators. The intellectual reputation of the city is nourished from the universities in Boston, and the residents are highly educated, sophisticated and wordly.

    City Hall galleries are the major centers for visual arts in Boston. The Mayor's Art Gallery, Scollay Square Gallery and the Mayor's Office of Arts exhibit the works of the city artists. A great many of the galleries are located on Newbury Street, South End and Fort Point Channel

    Cultler Majestic Theater, Strand Theater, Huntington Theater, Boston Opera House, Boston Ballet, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Berklee Performance Center and many more are the centers for all genres of musical and theatrical performances.

    The city is home to many parades, festivals and feasts. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade (March), Greek Parade (April), Patriots Parade (April), Gospel Fest (July), Hip Hop Fest (August), Santa Maria DiAnzano (June), St. Rocco (July) are just a few examples of the unlimited cultural events held in Boston.

    Boston Harbor situated alongside the Atlantic Ocean is garnished with 34 islands most of which are open to the public  to walk, to fish, to watch birds and to swim. You should absolutely visit these islands via just a short journey by ferry from the city. Taking a ride on the Swan Boats in the Public Garden is something dreamy to do for visitors.

    Boston is a heaven for boating pleasure. A boat ride on the Charles River or Boston Harbor is a wonderful experience that will give you a great deal of gratification. Cycling through the Emerald Necklace, swimming at the beautiful beaches (especially along Cape Cod), walking the 4 km Freedom Trail are all musts for entertainment and pleasure for the traveler visiting Boston.
  • Food & Drink

    The cuisine of Boston is largely based on seafood and dairy products. The main dishes of the city are clam chowder (soup with clams and broth) and other chowders (any of various soups containing flour, salt, pork or traditionally, hard tack and saline crackers), fish (fried, baked, broiled or boiled), chips (generally with cod or scrod), lobsters, baked beans and clams (steamed or fried). Apples are grown at various places in the city. Various pastries (especially apple pastries) are very popular.

    Boston has a multitudinous of restaurants offering ethnic and international cuisines. Faneuil Hall Marketplace teems with restaurants of every category and  plenty of shops. Chinatown offers a great selection of Asian restaurants. The North End is the place for the top-quality Italian restaurants. Newbury Street and Copley Place are centers for street cafes and local restaurants.
  • Shopping

    Boston offers a vast selection of department stores and boutiques to suit every taste. Books, music, food and fake furs are more prevalent in the city.

    Rockport Village is one of the great places for shopping. Bearsin Neck is the major shopping place in Rockport for tourists. This small peninsula is lined up with a great deal of boutiques, galleries and restaurants.

    Kittery near  New Hampshire is a place to find many outlets. Old New England Village (30 minutes north of Kittery)  teems with outlet stores.

    Newbury is one of the well known shopping streets in Boston. Luxury boutiques and galleries are available on the street.

    Fanueil Hall is a shopper's paradise. Accessories, books, men and women apparels, leather and luggage, jewelry, shoes, eyewears, housewares and many more are offered by more than 100 of the best shops.
