Bounded by Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Bothnia to the west, the Gulf of Finland between Sweden and Russia, the Republic of Finland is a Nordic country. Embracing ten thousands lakes and islands (about 188.000 lakes and 180.000 islands), Finland has an unprecedented, and diversified flora and fauna. Helsinki holding a place in the southern segment of Finland is the capital and the largest city of Finland. Helsinki, as the Finnish capital, the seat of the government, the center of the ministries and the state administration is situated on the coast of Baltic Sea. Acquiring kilometers of foreside on the shore of the Gulf of Finland along side the Baltic Sea, Helsinki is an unprecedented maritime city. The city is the center of the Finland's cultural, financial and economic activity.

  • Tourist Attractions

    No city in Europe is more integrated with nature and sea than Helsinki. The city is constituted of nature, sea and history. 501 km2 of 686 km2 of the capital is made up of sea and all the central districts of the city are located at the coastline. Hence, the city is named as the Daughter of the Baltic. Harboring a great deal of green and planted area expanding from the coast to the center of the city, Helsinki is home to 300 islands and many enchanting inlets. With its forests covering 3.800 hectares, parks blanketing 1.800 hectares, many beautiful islands, modern architectural structures, monuments, markets and countless museums, Helsinki has a plenty of diversified amusements for you.

    Kaivopuisto at the central Helsinki is the most famous park in the city. Taking its name from Kaivopuisto district, the park is flocked in from all parts of Helsinki to sunbathe, to have picnics and to organize various sports activities.

    Linnanmaki is a popular amusement park in Helsinki. Harboring about 30 different rides, the park has arcades, games, kiosks, restaurants, an outdoor stage and many more amusement alternatives.

    Senaatintori (Senate Square) is the official center of the city. It evokes a little Russia.

    Temppeliaukio Church is one of the best Finnish architectural examples in Helsinki. Hewn into solid rock, the church is a Lutheran one designed by Timo and Tuomo Soumalainen architects.

    Soumenlinna built on six islands is an inhabited sea fortress. As an UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress is one of the main sights of Helsinki with its locals, natural atmosphere and picnic places.

    The city is one of the centers of museums. Kansallismuseo, the National Museum of Finland, has a collection presenting the Finland's history since the Stone Age. The museum resembles a Gothic church with its stonewalls and tower. Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits a collection of Finnish and world art from 1960s to 1990s.

    Mannerheim Museum, Seurasaari Open-Air Museum and Sports Museum of Finland are just the other examples from the museums being present at the city.
  • Culture & Entertainment

    Helsinki is the cultural capital of Finland. Dance, theater, music and cinema are the fundamental arts in Helsinki. 

    Helsinki has three main theaters. Finnish National Theater located in the central city at the north of Helsinki Central Railway Station Square was established in 1872. It is the oldest theater in terms of Finnish performing arts. Helsinki City Theater and the Finland Swedish Svenska Theater are the other ones.

    Finnish National Opera and Finland Concert Hall are the major musical venues in Helsinki. Large open-air concerts are held in the city parks and the city's Olympic Stadium.

    Ateneum (National Gallery) located in the center of Helsinki at the Rautatientori Square opposite Helsinki Central Railway Station has the biggest collection of classical art in Finland. The paintings of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne will allure you. The Academy of Fine Arts is another cultural structure providing the highest university level theoretical and practical training in the country.

    Helsinki festival held in Helsinki every August is the annual arts and culture festival in Finland. Valon Voimat known as Forces of Light being art-related urban event is the winter arts festival in Helsinki. Also, Vappu celebrated between April 30 and May 1 is an annual festival for students and workers.

    Helsinki is an unprecedented city with its fauna and flora. Many sports and natural activities (like nature hikes, fishing, golf, skiing, snowboarding, skating, swimming), beaches, amusement parks, forests offer a plenty of benefactions for relaxation and recreation. More than 300 islands and ten kilometres of coastline present the opportunity of swimming and sunbathing. Beaches are mainly placed at Hietaniemi, Uunisaari, Seurasaari, Soumenlinna and Pihlajasaari.

    With its all sorts of bars, cafes, clubs and party places, Helsinki is a 24 hours party and entertainment city. You will find these entertainment venues at every part of the city.
  • Food & Drink

    The best cosmopolitan restaurants in Finland are found in Helsinki. There are all kinds of restaurants and open-air eating-places serving a plenty of local and international delicacies in the city. Fast food and international dining are popular in the city. You will luxuriate from the Finnish delicacies. Vegetarian, seafood, meat food and everything for all tastes are available in Helsinki. Cafes, bars, clubs and a great number of other places offer every kind of drinks.

    Vanha Kauppahalli (covered market) at the center of the city is one of the best places for fish food from the Finnish and Asian culinary culture. Known as the fish market, this place is popular with its food eaten on the plastic chairs and tables.

  • Shopping

    Shopaholics admire Helsinki as one of the best-diversified shopping centers in Europe. Everything suiting every need and curiosity on behalf of shopping is available in Helsinki. Huge and international shopping malls, big department stores, shopping streets, markets, specialty stores, boutiques, design shops and a lot more are present at the city.   

    Mannerheimintie, Aleksanterinkatu, Kaisaniemenkatu, Pohjois, Etela Esplanadi, Bulevardi and Fredrikinkatu are the main shopping streets of the city. Most of the main malls, department stores, specialty stores and more are amply present at these streets.

    Stockmann and Sokos at the center of the city are the biggest department stores in Helsinki. These shopping centers are bookstore paradises.

    Itakeskus at the eastern part of Helsinki teems with malls, the best-known retailers, department stores accompanied with cafes and restaurants.

    Aleksanterinkatu is a long pedestrian street connecting Mannerheiminitie and Senate Square. A plenty of shops and department stores are present at this shopping place. Clothes, footwear and jewellery are the main goods that you can buy at this street.
