Autumn jazz
Held this year for the 16th time, the Akbank Jazz Festival is bringing some of the world’s biggest names in jazz music to Istanbul 4-14 October. After a long hiatus, the festival, which is hosting over 130 artists in an organization by Pozitif, is taking place this year in Izmir and Ankara as well as Istanbul. Kicking off with a concert by jazz great, Kurt Elling, the festival will continue with Acoustic Ladyland and Polar Bear, one of the most exciting phenomena of the post-jazz period, Dhafer Youssef, who has brought the Sufi tradition and mystical elements to modern jazz music, Grammy-winner pianist Dave Burrell, vocalist Alice Russell, Grammy-winning Cuban piano virtuoso Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Brazilian Joao Bosco, and ney-player Süleyman Ergüner. The Uzel Ametist Clarinet Quintet, which works to promote chamber music for the clarinet, Ayşe Tütüncü, known for her jazz album, ‘Variations’, and The Ramon Valle Quartet of the piano virtuoso and genial composer of the same name, percussion master William Cardoso, the electro-acoustic group Psapp, celebrated DJ and producer King Britt, Orient Expressions-Demirer-Leo Tadin with their ethno-jazz programs, Birdy Nam Nam, and renowned accordion player Richard Galliano are among the festival guests.
Venues for the concert, which is dedicated to the memory of the late Arif Mardin, are the Akbank Art Center, Babylon, Yeni Melek Show Center, Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, Izmir’s Atatürk Culture Center and the the MEB Conference Hall in Ankara.
