January at Babylon
In the first days of the new year Babylon is hosting Sertab Erener, one of Turkey’s leading vocalists, and Sabri Tuluğ Tırpan, a pianist who skillfully combines crossover styles.
The concert is on 5 January. To be followed on 10 January by Orient Expressions and Sabahat Akkiraz, who sum up their adventure as ‘a journey into the unknown along a road that combines electronic music with the East’; and on 12 January by Swayzak, one of the first names that come to mind at the mention of house, techno and electronica. Art Brut, one of the most brilliant and ingenious groups in the art-punk movement, comes to Babylon on 13 January. Gerardo Núñez, regarded as one of the greatest Flamenco virtuosos of our day, is giving two concerts with his group on 17 and 18 January as part of Garanti’s ‘Jazz Green’ concerts. ‘Oldies But Goldies’, a unique Istanbul entertainment ‘Love Boat’-style, follows on
19 January. Other Babylon guests this month include popular Turkish rapper, Ceza, on 20 January; and The Chehadé Brothers, one of the leading groups of Beirut’s lively and exotic entertainment scene, on 24 January. Finally, percussion virtuoso Burhan Öçal will rock Babylon to its foundations on 25, 26 and 27 January with his latest album featuring the French doyen of electronic music, Smadj, and his talented local musicians from Thrace in the Trakya All Stars.
