2008 is Turkish year in Russia
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has put together a draft program of activities to be staged in conjunction with this year being declared ‘The Year of Turkish Culture’ in Russia.
According to the draft, a series of events will be organized over the year in the Russian cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi. ‘The Year of Turkish Culture’ will kick off on 8th April with a concert by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra at Moscow’s International House of Music. Other events include concerts by Tarkan, Sertab Erener and Şebnem Ferah. As part of the Moscow events, acclaimed Turkish conductor Emre Aracı will offer music lovers a treat in a concert titled ‘Composer Sultans’ to be given with the orchestra of world-famous Russian artist Yury Bashmet. The Taksim Trio, with Hüsnü Şenlendirici on clarinet, İsmail Tunçbilek on the bağlama and Aytaç Doğan on the kanun, will charm Moscovites with Turkish melodies. Piano virtuoso İdil Biret, clarinetist Selim Sesler and jazz musician Kerem Görsev are a few of the other artists that will appear as part of Russia’s Year of Turkish Culture. In addition to ‘Literature Days’ and lectures and panel discussions, an exhibition of Ara Güler’s photographs of Russia and Istanbul will also be mounted. The Year of Turkish Culture activities will be represented as well at the Moscow Book Fair to be held in September and in the Moscow Film Festival.
At the same time St. Petersburg will offer art lovers an exhibition on the art of paper marbling, and the World of Turkish Music Ensemble and Culture and Tourism Ministry whirling dervish team will perform in Kazan and Sochi. An exhibition of objects from Topkapı Palace is also planned in Russia to promote Turkey’s cultural heritage.
