Pink Martini and Their New Album
Winning hearts around the world with ‘Sympathique’ and ‘Hang on Little Tomato’, Pink Martini just released their new album.
Pianist and composer Thomas M. Lauderdale told us about his group’s latest album, ‘Splendor in the Grass’, which he describes as being ‘out in the street, participating in the world.’ For more, don’t miss the ‘Pink Martini’ concert at İş Sanat on November 24.
From which dusty shelf did you take the songs for ‘Splendor in the Grass’?
There are nine original songs and four covers on the album. One of the most special songs is one we recorded with the legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas and covered with an old Agustin Lara song, ‘Piensa En Mi’. It’s extraordinary. China sings Joe Raposo’s famous ‘Sing’ in a multi-lingual version. There’s also a song by Italian show star Rafaella Cara on the album. We want everybody to discover these old songs again.
You’ve given a dozen concerts in Istanbul. Do you visit all cities this often, or is Istanbul special?
We first came to Istanbul for the 2001 Jazz Festival and gave a concert we’ve never forgotten. We love this city, and the audience knows our music. We’re also good friends with the team we work with here.
