A New Treasure
A New Treasure
Sakıp Sabancı Museum has some highly valuable artifacts these days: The Treasures of the Agha Khan Museum
It is the architecture awards that immediately leap to mind at any mention of Agha Khan. Agha Khan has a respected place in the world of art thanks to those awards, which have been given annually since 1977 to contemporary designs that successfully reflect Islamic culture. Now a choice selection from Agha Khan’s collection, to be housed at the Agha Khan Museum due to open in Toronto in 2013, are at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum through November 5th.
Featured in the exhibition, which brings together representations of the Islamic world in regions from China and Indonesia to Sicily and Andalusian Spain, are miniatures from Shah Tahmasp’s famous Shahnameh and the oldest manuscript copy of Ibn Sina’s great ‘Canon of Medicine’, once regarded in Europe as the most authoritative book on the subject. Another surprise of the exhibition, which runs through February 27th, 2011, is a newly discovered manuscript of the Tales of the Thousand and One Nights going back 500 years or more and older than all previously known copies.
FILM DAYS AT MALATYA
Its name synonymous with the apricot and the color yellow, Malatya is a Turkish city about to pass its first test in film…
Organized this year for the first time by the Office of Governor of Malatya Province and the Malatya Foundation of Apricot Research, the Malatya International Film Festival started on November 26th. December 2nd is the last day of the festival, which kicked off with the film, ‘The Sugar Almonds’, written, produced and directed by Osman F. Seden with Türkan Şoray, Fatma Girik and Fikret Hakan sharing the lead roles.
Names like Woody Allen, Sofia Coppola, Ken Loach, Abbas Kiarostomi and Werner Herzog are among those represented at the event, which features productions that have been shown to critical acclaim at the world’s leading film festivals. A surprise of the festival, where Ayşen Gruda and Erol Günaydın are being honored with lifetime achievement awards, is that the International Feature Length Film Competition is open only to comedy films.
