One Director Three Films
Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s ‘Pandora’s Box’, ‘Waiting for the Clouds’ and ‘Journey to the Sun’ are all being shown at Istanbul’s French Culture Center.
If you want to take a comprehensive look at Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s film career, don’t make any plans for February 25-27 because Istanbul’s French Culture Center is showing three of her films as well as hosting an informal chat with the director. Besides Ustaoğlu’s own ‘Pandora’s Box’, ‘Waiting for the Clouds’ and ‘Journey to the Sun’, a French film of her choosing, Robert Bresson’s ‘Pickpocket’, will also be shown.
Born in Kars province’s town of Sarıkamış in 1960, Yeşim Ustaoğlu graduated from the Architecture Department of Karadeniz Technical University before starting her cinematic career, first with shorts but branching out later into feature-length films. The director, who made her debut with ‘Iz’ (The Trace) in 1994, came into her own with ‘Journey to the Sun’ in 1999.
Following ‘Waiting for the Clouds’, which she filmed against the poetic backdrop of the Black Sea in 2003, Ustaoğlu shot a documentary, ‘Life on their Shoulders’, set in the mountainous Çamlıhemşin village of Topluca. She walked off with the Best Film Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival for her most recent effort, ‘Pandora’s Box’, a joint Turkish-French-Belgian production.
