A play that examines art and love, ‘Şeylerin Şekli’ (The Shape of Things) is being restaged throughout January for those who missed it or would like to see it again. Written by Neil Labute and translated by Mehmet Ergen, the play can be seen at Akbank Sanat on January 2, 8, 9, 15, 23 and 30.


   The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet is bringing art lovers the season’s first ballet medley in  a program entitled ‘Circle of Fifths-Bolero-Paquita’. With offerings ranging from the classical to the neo-classical, the ballet medley will be at the Süreyya Sahnesi January 5 and 8.


   İSO-Odakule Art Gallery is hosting Özden Odman’s solo show, ‘kahVesaire telVesile’ (a play on the words for Turkish coffee and coffee grounds), starting January 6. Odman, who has turned the fond memory of a cup of coffee into a work of art, incorporates the unique lines and symbols that form in the grounds that cling to the sides and bottom of a Turkish coffee cup into visual elements of his paintings. Born in Bursa in 1979, Odman began his art training in Ohio before graduating from the Uludağ University Fine Arts Faculty. Through January 30.

   One of Turkey’s powerful landscape painters, Naile Akıncı is the guest of Evin Art Gallery this month with her 45th solo show. Known for her ‘Eyüp Variations’ which reflect the atmosphere of this historic Istanbul quarter, the artist is exhibiting her latest works in the current show. Through January 9.


   Combining the Trip Hop, Down Tempo and Electronica styles in his compositions and remixes, Kid Loco, or by his real name, Jean-Yves Prieur, is in Istanbul for the Garanti Jazz Festival. The event, which starts with a fun DJ set, is at Tamirhane on January.


   As the artist puts it, “This is a show that invites you inside. Inside wood, glass, trees, birds and alligators...” Yücel Kale’s exhibition, ‘Hayal Ürünü (Stuff of Dreams), starts with materials from everyday life and transports you into a fairy tale world. At Galeri Apel through January.


   Aslı Çavuşoğlu’s exhibition, ‘Dünyayı Nasıl Dolaştım’ (How I Wandered the World), is on at Galeri Non starting January 12. Spending the last two years in Germany, Argentina and Mexico, the artist has put together a show featuring diverse media such as sound, video and art books. Through February 13.


   Ukde’ (literally a ‘knot’) is a story that begins well but remains unresolved. Opening last month at the C.A.M. Gallery, ‘Ukde’  is an exhibition that brings together the works of four women artists, Nihal Martlı, Burcu Yağcıoğlu, Ebru Alpagut and Hande Varsat. Through January 15.

An exhibition at the Mayor Synagogue in Hasköy, ‘41-29 Istanbul’ has been extended to the end of 2010.

   Tolga Eti Sanatevi is bringing together some leading names in contemporary Turkish art in an exhibition entitled, ‘Original prints, water colors, ceramics’. Featuring the works of Burhan Doğançay, Süleyman Saim Tekcan, Mehmet Pesen and Adnan Turani, the exhibitions runs through January 31.
