Festival On The Islands
Istanbul’s Büyükada, largest of the so-called Prince’s Islands, is preparing to host the ‘Islands Culture and Art Festival’ this year for the first time.
Made up of Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, Kınalıada, Sedef Ada, Sivriada, Yassıada, Kaşık Ada and Tavşan Ada, the Istanbul Prince’s Islands now have their own festival, the ‘Islands Culture and Art Festival’. The festival, which has been organized for the purpose of offering Istanbul residents as well as Turkish and foreign tourists an escape from the daily grind just a stone’s throw from the city, as well as bringing art to the islands and promoting their deep-rooted cultural tradition, will be even more vibrant with the participation of artists from the town of Orestiada in Greece.
Principal venue for the festival, which will offer art lovers music, literature, painting, photography, theater and the performing arts, all free of charge, is the large square in front of the Büyükada Ferry Landing and Sea Bus Landing. Taking its inspiration from the concepts of art, belief, entertainment and eating-drinking of the various cultures that inhabited the island in the past and that dominate it now, the program features the 30-member ‘Laogrifiko Musio Orestiadas’ music, dance and choral group, a Bazouki concert by Orhan Osman, a concert by the Apostrophe Rock Group, a photography exhibition by Nikos Maginos, and a concert by Turkish Radio and Television’s Light Music and Jazz Orchestra.
