The ‘Istanbul - Marseilles’ exhibition is on at the Istanbul French Culture Center through June 19. Istanbul and Marseilles, two cities, cradles of two different civilizations, captured now by three photographers...

His name synonymous with Istanbul, photo-journalist Ara Güler has come together with two French photographers, Catherine Izzo and Bernard Plossu, in an exhibition: ‘Istanbul - Marseilles’. The photos will hang in the gallery, in the garden and on the exterior walls of Istanbul’s French Culture Center on İstiklal Caddesi through June 19, taking the viewer into a black-and-white world.

Some of the photos are already familiar. Ara Güler’s black-and-white views of Istanbul, for instance, which we know from Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk’s texts, published in France as ‘Lost Istanbul’. Bernard Plossu’s Marseilles photographs meanwhile are from the book, ‘Marseilles vu du bus’, published with an accompanying text by Gil Jouanard. Shot by the photographer from the windows of a city bus, the photos promise an unusual experiment in fleeting landscapes and the passengers that partially obscure them.

Turning now to Catherine Izzo’s Istanbul photographs, which she has been taking for ten years and which seem to emanate from a dream world, they too will appear in book form within the year under the title, ‘Istanbul Carnet Curieux’.
