It’s April Again, And Festival Time, As Istanbul Is Overtaken By The Scents Of Early Spring, Endless Talk About Film And The Rush To Find Tickets.
DEVOTING 15 DAYS TO CINEMA
There’s always cinema, but festival time is different. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the İstanbul Film Festival starts on Aprıl 2nd and runs through April 17th, bringing audiences upwards of 200 films. Noteworthy among them are Les Petits Mouchoirs, French actor Guillaume Canet’s third experiment in directing, Mike Leigh’s latest film, Another Year, François Ozon’s latest, Potiche, The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, Mark Romanek’s latest, Never Let Me Go, and John Cameron Mitchell’s latest, Rabbit Hole.
MURAKAMI’S NORWEGIAN WOOD
Outstanding among the films that will compete for the Golden Tulip Award is Tran Anh Hung’s adaptation of Norwegian Wood. Based on the novel of the same name by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, the story is set in Tokyo in the 1960’s. Like the Beatles song for which it is named, the film deals with themes of love, death, heartbreak and loss of innocence.

CLAIRE DENIS AND THE TINDERSTICKS
One of French cinema’s most original writer-directors, Claire Denis is sharing the stage in Istanbul with the English rock group Tindersticks, with whom she frequently collaborates in her films. The Claire Denis Film Music 1996-2009 / Tindersticks Concert is at Fulya Art Center the evening of April 11th.
