COCONUT CREPES, BUCKWHEAT HONEY, GOAT CHEESE WITH POMEGRANATES, MINT TEA… HERE ARE A FEW BREAKFAST TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
What would you say to a breakfast of olives, dates and mint tea in the Moroccan desert? Crepes with honey and pastries dusted with confectioner’s sugar are a few other staples of the local first meal of the day.
A ‘stick-to-your-ribs’ bowl of rice noodle soup is the breakfast of choice all along the Mekong River from China and Laos to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Straight from the oven fresh and steaming, paper-thin lavash bread with pomegranates, walnuts and creamy white feta cheese are the sine qua non’s of a simple but filling breakfast Caucasus-style.
Thyme-flavored goat cheese and filter café au lait are the best complements to a simple but tasty French provincial breakfast of fresh walnut rye bread.
Shao bing, a pancake filled with buckwheat honey, and the sweet soy milk known as do jiang make a classic Chinese breakfast for those keen to try something different.
Oatmeal, coconut crepes, spicy red beans, pureed lentils, and vegetable dumplings… Choosing breakfast in Malaysia isn’t easy.
And in the cafes around the flower market in Barcelona, a slice of bread drizzled with olive oil, rubbed with garlic and topped with fresh tomato and a slice of spicy dried beef await you, all washed down with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
GOOD MORNING, MEXICO!
Start the day in Mexico with a cup of hot chocolate flavored with cinnamon and almond. Then go bananas over Mexican pita bread topped with refried beans and melted farmhouse cheese. If you want to enjoy Mexican hot chocolate after you get home, just pick up some of the cocoa, vanilla and cinnamon that are widely available in the local markets.
