TRABZON IS GOING TO CHALK UP ANOTHER SPORTS FIRST WHEN 4,000 YOUNG ATHLETES FROM 49 COUNTRIES ENERGIZE THE CITY THROUGHOUT JULY AT THE EUROPEAN YOUTH OLYMPIC FESTIVAL.
The 2011 European Youth Olympic Festival, aka EYOF, is a European Olympic Committee (EOC) event. The first Olympic-level sports event to be held in Turkey, EYOF 2011 is going to radiate enthusiasm around the world.
HISTORY OF THE EVENT
The first sports activities organized in connection with EYOF were held in Holland in 1987. Since 1991, EYOF has continued to hold summer and winter festivals every year without interruption.
YOUNG ATHLETES
Under the rules, athletes 17 and under can participate in the event, which wants to give the message that mutual respect and tolerance, friendly competition, peace and fair play are the true aim of sport.
TRABZON’S COUP
Following its application in 2005, Trabzon’s candidacy was approved by the European Olympic Committee. The EYOF 2011 evaluation commission visited the city in 2006 to inspect the facilities, after which Trabzon was selected from among all the candidate cities to host the event..
A BRIEF HISTORY OF EYOF
Following the first event of 1987, with participation by only five countries, EYOF has gathered momentum until over 30 countries and hundreds of athletes take part in the summer and winter games today.
