From One Continent To Another
From One Continent To Another
ONE OF TURKEY’S MAJOR SPORTS EVENTS, THE PRESIDENTIAL CYCLING TOUR HAS THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE WORLD’S ONE AND ONLY INTERCONTINENTAL CYCLING TOUR WITH THE ISTANBUL LEG THAT WAS ADDED THIS YEAR
As a hundred and sixty-eight cyclists enjoyed the privilege of peddling from one continent to another on the 47th Presidential Cycling Tour, they also enabled the whole world to see the unparalleled beauties of Turkey again for eight straight days.
MAIN SPONSOR TURKISH AIRLINES
The tour, for which Turkish Airlines was one of the main sponsors, kicked off with the Istanbul leg. On this leg, dubbed ‘from Asia to Europe’, the cyclists crossed the Bosphorus Bridge to another continent. In a historic moment the cyclists’ struggle across the bridge was turned into a visual feast in the true sense of the word as this one and only intercontinental race went down in cycling history.
Mounting the podium, the winners of this leg, which ended on Bağdat Caddesi, were handed their awards in person by President Abdullah Gül. Later they covered a total of 1,387 kilometers on the Kuşadası-Turgutreis, Bodrum-Marmaris, Marmaris-Pamukkale, Denizli-Fethiye, Fethiye-Finike, Tekirova-Manavgat and Side-Alanya legs of the tour.
THE BEAUTIES OF TURKEY
Special prizes named for the beauties of Turkey were also given to racers on three legs of the tour through the country’s spellbinding landscapes. Russian athlete Alexander Efimkin was champion of the tour, in which Andrey Zeits finished second and Thibaut Pinot third. For eight days the Presidential Cycling reached a total of 123 countries in live broadcasts by Turkish Radio and Television and Eurosport, contributing importantly to the promotion of Turkey abroad.
