One Of The World’s Most Visited Touristic Monuments, The Eiffel Tower Is The Symbol Of Paris. Did You Know That It Was Built To Be Taken Down In 20 Years?
Built in honor of the centenary of the French Revolution, the Eiffel Tower is named for its designer, Gustave Eiffel. Made of more than 18,000 pieces of iron held together by two and a half million rivets, the tower opened on March 31, 1889. Offering a spectacular view of Paris from its upper levels, the tower is painted every seven year to guard against rust. Some 60 tons of paint are used, in three shades from light at the bottom to dark at the top to make it appear one color. Weighing 7,300 tons, the tower can expand by as much as 18 centimeters in sunlight and lean as much as 6-7 centimeters in the wind. The height of the tower, which consists of three sections, is 324 meters. Visited by close to 6 million people annually, the tower charges an entrance fee. There are 328 steps to the first level and 340 to the second level of the tower, which can be climbed either by stairs or elevator. Designed to stand for only 20 years when it was built, the Eiffel Tower was intended to be demolished in 1909, but this plan was abandoned owing to popular opposition. It has been used as a radio transmitter since the beginning of the 20th century.
