Eye Of The Artist

Something about İstanbul has enchanted and inspired artists for centuries. How would you like to see some of their favorite haunts through the eye of an artist?

Who could resist? It’s an offer you can’t refuse…  And Artistanbul, put together by photographer Christa Frieda Vogel with a preface by art historian Johannes Odenthal, is a good way to start rediscovering this magnificent city of ours. Some 34 artists are featured in the book, from experienced hands like Mehmet Güleryüz and Neş’e Erdok to the younger generation of artists like Hande Varsat and Sevin Özcan.

Artists' neighborhoods

Currently a faculty member at Sabancı University, Erdağ Aksel describes the commercial district of Perşembe Pazarı in Karaköy, which has fascinated him since childhood.

Born in the eastern city of Bayburt, Hanefi Yeter describes Tahtakale, Anatolia’s vital artery in Istanbul.
One of modern Turkey’s prominent women painters, Neş’e Erdok describes the Bosphorus quarter of Rumeli Hisar in the book, encouraging
readers to sit down in the castle and enjoy a glass of tea.
