Turkey In The Comics Capital Of The World!
Turkey In The Comics Capital Of The World!
The biggest comics festival in the world has been taking place in Angoulême for 38 years. And this year Turkey is in the spotlight.
An exhibition dedicated to Turkish comic books is being mounted this year in a series of events titled Comics Without Borders at the 39th Angoulême International Comics Festival.
Gürcan Gürsel, who worked in Belgium for many years, occupies a prominent place for his satirical short comics about soccer. Meanwhile, Abdülcanbaz, created by Turhan Selçuk who died two years ago, is also being billed as a masterpiece of political satire.
Another of the exhibition’s big guns is Ergün Gündüz, whose recent projects have brought him world recognition. Among the works created by Gündüz in collaboration with Murat Mıhçıoğlu, Efsun is expected to attract the most interest.
Meanwhile Cem Özüduru, known for his book Zombistan, is Turkey’s youngest comic book artist to be featured in the exhibition.
Everybody who happens to be heading for France in the last week of January will have a chance to discover the dynamic world of Turkish comics at Angoulême.
Ergün Gündüz, who has worked at a number of Istanbul-based humor magazines such as Gırgır and Hıbır, is one of Turkey’s top talents ever. The Mıhçıoğlu-Gündüz duo have been producing comics for U.S.-based projects for some time. This page is from one of their horror comics.
Angouleme Fun
Mentioned in the same breath with major events like New York Comic Con, the Angoulême International Comics Festival is unarguably the world’s largest gathering of its kind. What makes it possible is this charming French town, whose streets, shops, firms and individuals give the festival their all.
