Two Hundred Years Of Bosphorus Civilization

AN EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ANATOLIAN SHORES OF THE BOSPHORUS FROM THE MID-19TH TO THE 20TH CENTURY CAN BE VIEWED AT PERA MUSEUM THROUGH APRIL 1.

So much importance does Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar give to the Bosphorus in his books about Istanbul that he even speaks of a Bosphorus Civilization. A mere list of all the works inspired by the Bosphorus is proof positive of how right he was. The Pera Museum, which exhibited photographs of the European shores of the Bosphorus to wide acclaim some six years ago, this time is hosting an exhibition of photographs of the Anatolian shore culled from the Suna and İnan Kırac Photography Collection and other private collections. Curated again by architect Sinan Genim, Ph.D., the exhibition consists of photos shot by professionals like Caranza, Robertson, Pascal Sébah, Kargopoulo, Sébah & Joaillier, the Abdullah Brothers, the Gülmez Brothers, Ali Sami Aközer, Ali Enis Oza and Elisa Pante Zonaro as well as many by amateurs. From Constantinople to Istanbul: Photographs of the Anatolian Shore of the Bosphorus from the Mid-19th to the 20th Century, which runs from January 21 to April 1, is a promising exhibition for viewers keen to see for themselves the last two hundred years of Bosphorus Civilization.
