The 18th century was a period of enormous changes in the Ottoman state, and Şeyh Galip was the last great poet in the Ottoman tradition. Fire of Love tells the story of his love for Beyhan Sultan, a niece of Sultan Abdulhamid I. A story of hopeless love set against a backdrop of social and political upheaval, it is a novel befitting Şeyh Galip, who, in his most famous work, Hüsn-û Aşk (Beauty and Love), has his hero, Love, board a ship made of wax to go in search of the heroine, Beauty. Mine Sultan Ünver is to be commended for her book whose lively and flowing narrative draws the reader in.
