A Broadway musical is being staged in Turkey with Turkish players for the first time as part of the 40th anniversary of Akbank Children’s Theater. Following the Istanbul gala in May, the musical will tour Anatolia, playing first in Van followed by Gaziantep, Adana, Kayseri, Ankara and Bursa.
The musical is based on the script of the popular film, Shrek, which is known for going beyond the usual fairytale clichés. With a sense of humor that appeals not only to children but to adults as well, Shrek promises a fun time to everyone from seven to seventy. And with a subtext that is not only humorous but touches on issues like prejudice and alienation as well, Shrek is actually about society as a whole. A rousing show that questions concepts like good and evil, ugly and beautiful, Shrek the musical pokes fun of thousands of years of traditional fairy tales that have engraved those concepts in the social consciousness.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The two-act musical was written by David Lindsay-Abaire and composed by Jeanine Tesori. Translated into Turkish by Ekin Tunçay Turan, the work is being produced jointly with the Talimhane Theater. Mehmet Ergen is directing the cast of 15 actors and five musicians, with musical direction by Bob Broad. Barış Dinçer designed the set for the production, and Yakup Cartık is the lighting designer.
