Victory in Turkey’s war of liberation was crowned with the proclamation of the republic on October 29, 1923, confirming once again that sovereignty belongs to the people.
The Grand National Assembly of Turkey was the scene of an historic session on October 29, 1923. With the proclamation of the republic, asserting the independence of Turkey won under the leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the form of government of the new state became clear and Ataturk was elected its first president. The struggle for independence, the first steps toward which were taken at Samsun on May 19, 1919, had achieved its final objective, and the ideal that sovereignty belongs to the people been truly realized with the inauguration of the first Grand National Assembly on April 23, 1920.
Immediately following his election by parliament as the country’s first president, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk summed up the significance of the new republic as follows: “Its government’s new name will enable our nation to demonstrate its character and worth more easily to the civilized world. The Republic of Turkey is going to prove through its deeds that it merits its place in the world.”
