BARBAROS HAYREDDIN PASHA TOOK OTTOMAN MARITIME HISTORY TO A PINNACLE WITH THE VICTORIES HE WON.
Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha was one of the sons of Yakub Agha, who settled on the Aegean island of Midilli (Mytilene or Lesbos) in the time of Sultan Mehmet II (the Conqueror). The adventures on the high seas that he undertook at a young age with his brothers Oruç and İlyas, who were also sea captains, quickly brought him recognition in Europe and the Mediterranean. Known in Europe as Barbarossa for his thick red hair and beard, Hayreddin Pasha’s actual name was Khizr. The name Khayr al-Din (Hayreddin in Turkish), meaning ‘benefactor of religion’, was bestowed on him personally by Sultan Selim I for services rendered to the Empire.
GOVERNOR OF ALGIERS
Entering the service of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Selim I, Khizr Reis would go down in history as Admiral Hayreddin Pasha and the Governor of Algiers. Hayreddin Pasha, who is interred in the mausoleum erected for him on the shore at Beşiktaş where he anchored his ships in Istanbul, was one of the leading lights of his age and conversant in several foreign languages.
THE LEGEND
Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha is affectionately venerated today in Algeria as one of its national heroes.
