City Guide: Berlin

Berlin is the capital and the biggest, with a population of almost 3.3 million, city of Germany. Falling asunder as East and West Berlin between 1949 and 1990, it was reunited in 1990 after the fall of Berlin Wall as a consequence of the collapse of communism. After the reunification, the city thrived a long period of time to reinvent itself from its ruins.

  • Tourist Attractions

    Berlin is an artistic and architectural city. The historical monuments and the museums within the borders of the city are the main cultural and tourist heritages of the city.

    Alexanderplatz, Brandenburg Gate, and Charlottenburg Palace are the most important tourist places of the city. Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburg Tor) is the most famous landmark of the city divided the city till 1989. Now, it is the symbol of the national unity.

    Zoologischer Garten located at the southwest of Tiergarten is the oldest zoo of the city that you should certainly see. There are 1500 species and a total of 14.000 animals in the zoo. The aquarium within the zoo includes different kinds of fish, insects, crocodiles, poison frogs, octopuses and more.

    There are innumerable museums in the city waiting for your visitation. Bauhaus Museum fur Gestaltung at Tiergartan, Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin at Mitte, Deutsches Technikmuseum at Kreuzberg, Gemäldegalerie Museum at Tiergarten, Jüdisches Museum (the largest Jewish Museum in Europe) at Kreuzberg, Pergamon Museum at Mitte, Reichstag (German Priament since1999) are the places not to be missed.

    Among the museums above, Pergamon Museum with its classical collection of Greek, Babylonian, Roman, Islamic and Middle Eastern art and architecture is the first must-see place.

    After the reunification of the city in 1990, the dynamic population of the city (more than half is under 35) declared a cultural movement to add dynamism to the cultural treasury of the city. A great deal of theatres and cinemas are existed in the city. It is regarded as the Culture Capital of Europe in the sense that the city is famous for its international architecture, fine and performing arts.

    Maxim Gorki Theater at Mitte, Deutsches Theater at Mitte, Berliner Ensemble Theater at Schiffbauerdamm, Deutsche Oper at Charlottenburg, Komische Oper at Mitte and more are important art and performing centers of Berlin.

    The condition of Berlin to have more than one center leads the cafes and bars to be spread all around the city. The garden cafes are mostly placed at Paul Linke Ufer.

    Nice bars are placed at Oranienburger Strabe and Hackescher Markt. In Pariser Strabe and Kollwitzplatz, you will find catchy places to get together with your friends.

    You will find a sophisticated international cuisine in Berlin. That is, the city definitely has the potential of serving every taste. French, German, Indian, Indonesian, Italian, Thai, Turkish, Arabian and more cuisines offer a wide range of delicious palates to your taste.

The festival is also organizing a congress that will take up the theoretical side of the media arts and a forum to be held with participants from Europe’s schools of art and design. As well as a large number of workshops, presentations and panel discussions, also awaiting participants is the awards ceremony for the best German experimental film.

An event that makes an impact on media aesthetics and trends, the festival is taking place this year at Osnabrück, April 18 to 22.
