Emin Nedret İşli Is one of Turkey’s most senior and knowledgeable antiquarian booksellers. We chatted briefly with him about the profession.
How long have you been in the business?
I’ve been surrounded by books for as long as I can remember. I don’t even want to remember back that far!
How does it feel to find a book you’ve been hunting for years?
It’s one of most unusual and pleasant emotions in the world… like achieving an objective, finding a lost item that seems to belong to you. You experience all those emotions at once.
You’ve sold some very expensive books. What was special about them?
Rare books and manuscripts usually go for high prices. The figure can go even higher when they are sold as a collection.
How much interest is there in antiquarian books in Turkey?
Interest is mounting daily. Companies, individual collectors and the private universities taking an interest in antiquarian books. There are serious collectors out there who know what they’re doing and who collect books on specific themes, and that makes me happy.
