The Winter Tourism Experience In Turkey

Here’s the latest from turkey’s four major ski resorts, all with enchanting winter scenes, sunny ski runs, cosy mountain hotels, and fabulous festivals.

OLYMPIC CITY
Successfully hosting the 2011 Universiade Winter Games, Erzurum is rapidly becoming an Olympic city. And Palandöken Ski Center is a mere five kilometers from the city center. The runs at this resort, which offers three, four and five-star hotels, total up to 28 kilometers in length. Thanks to the latest in snow machine technology, there is skiing at the center to the end of March. The double ski-jumping towers are unique in Turkey in this historic city, which now boasts two new ski resorts, Konaklı and Kandilli, thanks to some hefty investment.

ULUDAĞ’S TIME
One of Turkey’s oldest and most-established winter tourism spots, Uludağ is within easy reach of Bursa Yenişehir Airport. The snow cover never falls below a meter in February at this center, which offers 11 runs of varying degrees of difficulty and 22 mechanical lifts. Accommodations too are plentiful with 14 different alternatives, most of them starred. At the end of a fun-filled day on the slopes, sports buffs head for the fashionable hotels. Choose a Turkish bath or dinner by the fireplace… It’s up to you!

WHITE MAGIC
At 45 kilometers from Bolu city center, Kartalkaya Ski Center appeals for its proximity to both Istanbul and Ankara. Holding the snow record for the season, the center is expected to have a cover of a meter and a half in February. With six big hotels, this center is ideal for everything from skiing and snowboarding to tobogganing and motor safaris. The long-lasting snow cover is a big advantage at this center, whose forested slopes protect it from winter’s harsh winds.

BIRD’S-EYE CAPPADOCIA
Twenty-seven kilometers from Kayseri Airport, Erciyes (pronounced Air-jee-ess) Ski Center boasts 13 runs from easy to moderately difficult. Four hotels operate at the center, which offers winter sports enthusiasts a chance to ski in view of the Cappadocia Valley’s unique contours. The Erciyes hotels offer discounts of up to 40% on weekday stays during semester break. There are runs of varying degrees of difficulty at this center, which opened in the last week of December with 40 centimeters of snow. And professional instructors are on hand to meet all needs from equipment to lessons.
