Rally On The Ocean Shore

THE DAKAR RALLY IS COMING TO MOTORSPORTS ENTHUSIASTS THIS YEAR FOR THE 34TH TIME. HELD ON THE SOUTH AMERICAN COAST SINCE 2009, THE RACES GET UNDER WAY ON JANUARY 5.

It all started when French motorcycle racer Thierry Sabine got lost in the Libyan desert in 1977. Dreaming of turning the area into a race course when he got back to France, Sabine achieved his goal two years later.
Launched with Sabine’s motto, “A challenge for those who go, a dream for those who stay behind,” the Dakar Rally has been one of the world’s most anticipated rallies ever since. Held in Europe and Africa from 1979 to 2007, it is welcoming racing buffs January 5 to 20 on a dangerous and adventurepacked
course in its fifth year on the coast of South
America.
Dominated by Argentine, Russian and French teams in recent years, this time as always the Dakar Rally is sure to knock your socks off.

THE FIRST TURK
‘Desert Tiger’ Kemal
Merkit, who died last year, was the first Turk to compete in the rally in the motorcycle (moto) class. Merkit, who took part in the rally nine times, managed to complete it six times.
