Turkey Hits Its Shot

Belek is again hosting the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open.

One of the most exciting legs of the Ladies European Tour (LET), the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, organized by Mineks International, is taking place at Antalya National Golf Club, May 9 to 12. Names to watch are Christel Boeljon, who won the tournament twice in succession, Melissa Reid, the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open’s first champion, and the legendary Laura Davies. Not to mention Zhang Yuyang, Li Jiayun and Lin Xiyu from China, who are playing in the tournament for the first time. Amateur golfer Jaxaliyeva Jamila from Kazakhstan is also competing for the 250,000-Euro prize at the professional tournament in Turkey. Spaniard Carlota Ciganda, who completed last year’s tournament in third place, finished first in the European rankings in 2012. Also among the names on the pre-tournament form are the Norwegians, Marianne Skarpnord and Suzann Petterson, who finished second at the team championship in China.

Let’s have a look at some vital statistics in the runup to the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, one of the major international sports events regularly hosted by Turkey.

The only hole-in-one of last year’s tournament was shot  by Swedish golfer Pernilla Lindberg.

Christel Boeljon of the Netherlands won the Turkish Airlines  Ladies Open two consecutive years.

Seven countries will be represented at Antalya this year for the first time: China, Kazakhstan, Peru, Namibia, Colombia, Mexico and Latvia.

English amateur Charley Hull was only 16 years old when she finished last year’s tournament in 5th place.

The golfers taking part in the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open  this year represent a total of 31 countries.

Spaniard Carlota Ciganda finished 18 holes in 66 strokes in the  third round last year to break a National Golf Club record.

Turkish Airlines Ladies Open champion Christel Boeljon of the Netherlands took a total of 285 strokes to finish the course.
