Welcome Aboard

Dear Guests,
The great American writer Mark Twain is rumored to have said, “Life would be infinitely happier if only we could be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18.” Turkish Airlines, which was founded in 1933 and is celebrating its 80th birthday this year, is the living embodiment of that sentiment. With 80 years of maturity and experience, our company today possesses at once the dynamism, excitement and innovativeness of a young person. More especially, it exhibits a vitality in keeping with our country as it grows and develops under the leadership of our distinguished Prime Minister.

Many things have changed and developed in 80 years. In the 1950’s we had a fleet of 30 DC-3 Dakota aircraft; in 2002 we had 65 Boeing and Airbus planes. In the space of a decade the number of our aircraft has soared to 218 and their average age dropped to six. Not only that, we are going to receive deliveries of 276 more planes by 2021. We started out by connecting Ankara with Eskişehir. Today we connect Istanbul to 222 cities and many of our other cities directly to the world. We boast the world’s 4th largest air transport network. Through our investments, we have developed ourselves in every area from the technical field to training and become one of a handful of global airlines in the world.

But there are also things that have not changed in 80 years. As well as the importance we place on our employees, our desire to constantly improve the quality of our service and to serve with a smile has not changed. Your interest and kind favor have been constant as well. We therefore extend our appreciation to the 39 million passengers who chose us in 2012 and look forward enthusiastically to the 46 million guests we are targeting in 2013.

It is impossible to know today what will happen in 80 years’ time, but it is not difficult to predict that man’s need to change place quickly and easily is going to increase, indeed that interplanetary travel may even get under way. As an aeronautical engineer, I would like to congratulate in advance our as yet unborn flight engineers who may design planes that can fly even outside the earth’s atmosphere. If Turkish Airlines is a key player in international flight today, then we would also like to be a major player in interplanetary flight when that day comes. With our multifarious investments, our human resources and a smile on our face, we at Turkish Airlines are ready to utilize the advantages offered by Istanbul, which lies at the heart of Eurasia, and transport you wherever you want to go comfortably and quickly.

In hopes that we will meet again on many more birthdays,  I thank you for choosing Turkish Airlines.

Sincerely yours,

Temel Kotil, Ph.D. CEO
