City Guide: Dhaka
Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is located geographically at the heart of the country. It stretches from Buriganga River over the fertile Ganges Delta. Hundreds of rivers and lakes are surrounded by tropical forests. The picture is complete with tea gardens and mountain passageways stretching high into the sky.
Dhaka, formerly known as Jahangirnagar, is regarded as the City of Mosques today. The city is a point of attraction not only for industrial and commercial events; but also for cultural and political ones. Dhaka is a city that receives increasingly more immigrants due to the opportunities it presents. Although the running rickshaws in the downtown area, the crowd and constant movement may seem frightening upon first look, this colorful chaos makes Dhaka unique. The constant movement is quite normal when it is taken into account that there are more than 400 thousand rickshaws and twelve million people in the city.

Tourist Attractions
An approximately 30 minute tour on a rickshaw can be enough to get a sense of Dhaka. You can also go from the downtown area to the far streets by these wheeled vehicles, pulled by manpower on pedals in also 30 minutes. The time period between October and March is when the monsoon climate is less effective and the temperature stays around 20° C. It would be advisable to visit Dhaka around that time of the year.
Lalbagh Fort is one of the monumental structures of Dhaka, of which it is very proud. It was built by Prince Mohammed Azam Shah, the son of Emperor Aurangzebi approximately in the middle of the 17th century. The tomb of Bibi Pari, the daughter of Shaista Khan can be seen here.
The pink colored Ahsan Manzil, which was used as the palace of Dhaka Nawab family in the past, is a museum today. A magnificent architectural masterpiece, Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban, which is the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, can be listed among places to visit. -
Culture & Entertainment
Hundreds of mosques are located in Dhaka. Baitul Mukarram is known as the National Mosque of Bangladesh. This mosque, built in 1960, is interesting for its architectural resemblance to Kaaba. The Seven Domed Mosque and the Star Mosque, famous for its mosaics, stand out among mosques that are worth a visit.
The Dhaka Zoo, which contains two lakes, is located on a 90 hectare-area. 191 different species can be observed in this colorful place to visit, where over two thousand animals live. As monumental masterpieces, the Hindu temples Dhakeswari and Ramkrishna draw visitors’ attention. -
Food & Drink
In the old downtown area of the city, you can try traditional dishes of Bangladesh, for very reasonable prices also. However, in order to try out different cuisines such as Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Greek in relatively more expensive restaurants, you should head towards the Gulshan and Banani regions.
Among the local dishes, altogether known as Misti, rasgullah and gulab are worth a try. These desserts can be described as soft tender cheese balls –made of white and red colored cheese, fried and covered with syrup. -
Shopping
Small marketplaces are easy to comeby everywhere in Dhaka.Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, and Dhanmondi regions are worth a visit for such places. Bango Bazar is a major point of attraction for tourists as the prices there are relatively more reasonable. Aranya, a shopping location on Kemal Ataturk Street, is one of the most colorful sport in the Banani region.
The four story Aarong is a shopping mall, where you can handcrafts unique to Bangladesh and clothing for both men and women. It is located at the intersection of Mirpur and Manik Mia streets. A thin and loosely knitted cotton fabric called “muslin” has made Dhaka famous around the world. Although the word means “from/of Mosul”, Dhaka was known as the world capital of muslin.

With fifteen million people, Dacca, city of mosques, is one of the world’s most heavily populated cities. Situated on the Bengal Delta, which is formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, the city boasts a labyrinthine network of canals. Rich in history, it was transformed into a great trade center in the 17th century. Between 1905 and 1912 and again in 1947 it was the capital of East Bengal, and in 1956 the capital of East Pakistan, which gives it confidence in the future after a long and turbulent past. As a word, ‘dacca’ means ‘concealed’. But there are also those who claim that the city’s name derives from the ‘dhak’ trees that are common in the region, or from the 16th century Dhakeswari Temple. We start our tour of the city from the National Museum. Known as the Pink Palace, this magnificent 19th century building is a museum today where the city’s Buddhist and Hindu past is spread out for all to see. After our museum visit, we are in the new city center at Gulshan.Embassies, international firms and schools, and restaurants serving examples of world cuisine are located here in this commercial district. Dacca’s mystical markets can also be found in Gulshan, which is really two districts in one. Organized along the lines of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, Gulshan 1 is bursting with shops selling spices, fruits and vegetables, and kitchen items. New Market, on the other hand, in the part of the city known as Old Dhaka, boasts bazaars like the Bangho Bazaar that specialize in local products.
A CARNIVAL OF COLORS
After seeing the University of Dacca, one of the most prominent educational institutions of the Islamic world, we stop at the Liberation War Museum. The museum, on Segun Bagicha Avenue, tells the story of Bangladesh history from the colonial period to independence in 1971. Lying on the banks of the Buriganga River, the city can also be toured on one of the boats that depart from Sadarghat Terminal. Lalbagh Tower, built in the 17th century, is another prominent Dacca structure. Just 500 meters from the tower, the 1706 Khan Mohammed Mirdha Mosque is one of the city’s most beautiful Islamic monuments. Each one of the streets around the mosque is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. We recommend that you make the mosque your headquarters and lose yourself briefly in the streets, an unparalleled experience smack dab at the heart of a rainbow of color enlivened by sounds, sights and faces.. And if you get tired, you can be driven where you want to go in one of city’s many three-wheeled bicycle rickshaws.
